The correct answer, from a Muslim, is that we pray separately for reasons of modesty and it is totally possible to get attracted as GOD has created attraction Between Men and Women). In the time of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) women would pray in rows behind the rows of men. If they prayed in front of the men or mingled with the men then when we prostrate men would get a direct view of womens bottoms, this is not a way to be modest and would make it difficult for everyone to concentrate on their prayers.
These days we either pray behind the men, in rows adjacent to men, with a curtain dividing men and women or in a separate prayer room for women.
it is the opposite. It is more rewarding for Muslims to pray in a gathering to feel solidarity and cooperation. The exception is to pray separately if they are at work on their own or at home alone, etc.
because when you pray to Allah you must be in a clean state of mind with pure thoughts and well having women bend over in front of men can sometimes foul that pure mind with impure thoughts so they are separated when they pray
If there are separate rooms (some don't) then it is most likely that one is for the women to pray in and one is for the men to pray in.
The prayer room is used for offering prayer. It is also used for learning/teaching of the holy Qur'an and sunna. It is also used for delivering lectures on various topics of Islam.

If it is a room in a larger structure that has a non-religious purpose, such as in a bus station, hospital, etc., i.e. the Islamic equivalent of a chapel, it is called a musallah. If you are talking about a massive structure, i.e. the Islamic equivalent of a cathedral, that would be a jame'a.
