∙ 14y agoAntibiotics are usually given as a course of treatment over a period of two weeks. Many patients don't finish the course because they think they are now better. The bacteria that remain when the course is prematurely stopped are probably more resilient to the use of antibiotics and go on to infect others. They are in turn a stronger strain than the majority of others in the previous infection. Mutation increases their chance of survival.
