How did guerrilla warfare affect the outcome of the battle of king's mountain?
The patriot militia including the over mountain men silently enveloped their forces to surround the loyalist militia at King's Mountain. Then the patriots attacked by surprise. The patriots charged up the hill by surprise while also firing their weapons from behind trees and stones. The loyalists were completely taken by surprise. They had very little defense including poorly built barricades because their leader Patrick Ferguson didn't think it was necessary to prepare for a possible patriot ambush. During the battle, the loyalists would make a bayonet charge down hill at the patriots. Since the patriots had no bayonets of their own, they would retreat down hill and melt back into the forests avoiding costly hand to hand combat. This happened three times. The patriot casualties were 29 killed and 58 wounded. The patriots were able to utilize guerrilla tactics by attacking by surprise, feigning retreats from costly hand to hand combat, and using cover and concealment within the environment while sniping loyalists who were poorly protected by their incomplete barricades. With such guerrilla tactics and warfare, the patriot conflicted way more casualties on the loyalists and were able to claim victory.
