Lightning is lazy and tries to take short cuts on its way to hitting the ground. Anything that stands up away from the surface of the ground becomes a target, trees are a perfect example - they get hit regularly by lightning. Crouching on the ground reduces your height and therefore reduces the chance of becoming a short cut target for the lightning. Mind you, if you are in an open field, this action may not save you. The best place to be is still inside, away from windows and water.
During a volcanic eruption, animals should try to find shelter in a safe location away from the volcanic activity. They should seek higher ground if possible to avoid potential lava flows or flooding caused by the eruption. You should never stand under a tree. You should crouch down but not lay flat on the ground. when you crouch or stoop down you decrease your size. If you lie down you increase your size and are making a bigger target for a lightning strike. Never stoop near water or large power lines. Just remember if you hear thunder, there is lightning and a potential for a lightning strikel.
If possible get out into the open where nothing can fall on you. If you are in a built up area shelter under something sturdy. The shaking of the ground is not likely to harm you it is falling objects that hurt people during an earthquake.
