The US did fight in World War 1, although not from the beginning. Same for World War 2. When both world wars began, they were seen as European squabbles, and there was a strong feeling that the US should make every effort to stay out of them.
Churchill wanted the US in the World War 2, he needed the Us in the war. Britain was losing until the US started fighting. When the US joined, he was happy.
The US felt Europe should handle Europe's problem.
After World War 2, the US had the strongest economy in the world.
The involvement was to stop the spread of Communism into the whole of Southeast Asia. It failed to succeed in Vietnam but did win in the larger context. Praising the US might be a stretch, but certainly is should not be condemned for its efforts.
