Consider the alternatives, if Britain was not a constitutional monarchy, it would either have to have an executive head of state, such as the USA or France now has or the monarch would have to be replaced as head of state by a figurehead president (as Ireland or Germany have). An executive presidency would require a completely new constitutional system (what powers would Parliament retain, for example) while a figurehead president is usually a political appointee of the party in power and therefore runs the risk of being unacceptable to supporters of the opposition party.
A constitutional monarchy isn't suitable for every country but while the monarchy stands aside from politics and is generally respected by the people, it gives a sense of unity and continuity to Britain, which perhaps the Republican alternatives couldn't.
