A huge number of dangerous things, bacterial, viral and environmental, are spread by dirty hands. Note that you likely wipe yourself when you go to the bathroom, so your hands can carry a very large bacterial load. If you don't wash it off, you'll injest it yourself and spread it to others. Likewise, if you work or play around dangerous environmental pathogens, the same thing happens. Hospitals feel that the most important factor in controlling the spread of in-hospital disease is personal hygene. Some sources report up to 33% post operative infection in hospital, much of it non-aerobic. So hey! Lave los manos! :}

You should wash your hands often. When you eat, you are putting food into your mouth, which gives it access to your body. If you touch your food with your hands, and kids in particular eat a lot of things with their hands, Sandwiches, chips, fries, dipping nuggets all sorts of things. If you have touched doorknobs, toilet handles, and any thing that someone else has touched, you are putting those germs into your body.

Because throughout the day you come into contact with millions of germs, which stick on your hands and can multiply. When you eat something you touch your food, so if you've got loads of germs on your hands your basically putting them into your mouth and into your body which could make you very ill and lead to infection ect.

Think of what you do everyday. When going to the bathroom, you're touching your genitals (male or female). People have sex from time to time. Foreplay is usually involving the hands at some point. Scratching your face, with oils and makeup. Fixing your hair, you could have lice/dandruff.

Touching a keyboard 50 other people have touched. Opening doors hundreds of people have also touched. For some reason, that doesn't sound too appealing in my salad.

You should wash your hands prior to cooking to ensure any pathogenic bacteria (such as E. coli or Salmonella) are reduced or removed. This dramatically reduces the risk of cross-contaminating ready-to-eat products like fresh produce or precooked deli meats. You should also wash your hands after cooking to ensure any pathogenic bacteria (such as E. coli or Salmonella) that got onto your hands from raw foods like meat, poultry or eggs are reduced or removed. This dramatically reduces the risk of cross-contaminating the rest of your house, like the dishes or the door handles.
