Holding it the wrong way over a long period can lead to repetitive strain injury. A mouse shaped to suit your hand is better. At a simpler level you can use the mouse more efficiently if you hold it properly.

Oh my ! Slowly ( and gently ) go over every inch of the quilt feeling for it, by folding the quilt over your fingers. You should be able to locate it eventually, then gently push the point through the fabric, grasp it and remove it. GOOD LUCK !
At first, pick the mouse up by the base of or middle of it's tail, not the end as you'll break it. the base is thicker & stronger for it. Lower the mouse onto your hand & stroke it gently. If it's flighty, hold the tail gently as well.
