What action should someone take if they have an abnormal pap smear?

The action that should be taken is dependent on the results of the procedure. Some results, such as ASCUS or CIN 1, are followed up with the same procedure in about 6 months. More serious findings, however, are typically investigated further with a procedure called colposcopy.

What if abnormalities appear in pap test?

Generally, they will first repeat the pap to lessen the chance of a false positive. If the second test comes back 'abnormal' as well then they will probably do two things -- do an HPV test, as being infected with HPV causes an abnormal result, and schedule you for a colposcopy. An initial "abnormal" result does NOT automatically mean that you have cancer or another problem, so don't stress yet!! During a colposcopy they set you up just like they do for a PAP, then they roll over a machine that has a long lens on it which allows the doctor to look at your tissues in high detail to check for visible abnormalities. Samples may be taken at this time for further tests. Then they will give you some more information. If there are 'funny spots' but nothing obviously cancerous, then they may do a cryo treatment. The cryo treatment (I don't remember the real name of it) is similar to removing a wart from a finger -- they use liquid nitrogen to freeze and kill the abnormal tissues. It sounds horrible, the process really isn't too bad. They will send you home, after a bit you will experience a 'period' as the dead tissues slough out, and they will give time for things to heal and regrow down there. Then they will set you up with another colposcopy and PAP to see how things have rehealed. If you are better, then they'll just want you to come back every 6 months for 2 years to check that things haven't changed. If they find something more, it will continue in some other way... but the initial "abnormal" right now just means more tests, so don't worry!
