Traditional Judaism is a patriarchal system, meaning it's passed down through the males. Bar means son and Mitzvah is covenant - so Bar Mitzvah means "Son of the Covenant" In this ceremony the son is introduced to the promise, or covenant, that G_d made with Abraham and to his sons. Originally, the ceremony meant the boy is inheriting his portion in Go_d's promise as he has become a man, but now it is more just a right of passage from child to man. The Bat Mitzvah is generally just a ceremony of the daughter becoming a woman and participating in the Jewish culture and religion, but to some traditionalists it is seen as an inappropriate implication that the daughter is inheriting the promise on her own and not as a member of the family of her father or her husband.

What are some of Jewish ceremonies?

Jewish life is governed by 613 categories of commandments - a list of which can be found at http://www.answers.com/topic/613-mitzvot-1. These are binding on all Jews. E.g. Jews may not cook - nor eat - meat and milk together. Over the centuries various customs have developed, a discussion of which can be found at http://www.answers.com/topic/minhag. Different families have different customs - and these may change over time. E.g. Some Jews wait 6 hours between eating meat and milk, some only 3 hours and some only 1 hour.

What if you're an adult but didn't have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

It's NOT too late - you can still have one, since Judaism teaches lifelong learning. There are reasons why some some Jews didn't have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah as a child: 1. Some children may have learning difficulties and are too overwhelmed to be able to concentrate on the required training, and feel they should wait until adulthood. 2. Some adults grow up non-religious and experience a religious awakening. 3. Orthodox Judaism doesn't practice Bat Mitzvah, but may have another form of celebration for girls. 4. Some children are simply not interested in becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. 5. Some adults want to be full-fledged members of the Jewish Community.

What happen during bat mitzvah?

Today most non-Orthodox Jews celebrate a girl's Bat Mitzvah in the same way as a boy's Bar Mitzvah. Generally Bat mitzvah's are for 12 year old girls. All Reform and Reconstructionist, and most Conservative synagogues have egalitarian participation, in which women read from the Torah and lead services. The majority of Orthodox Jews reject the idea that a woman can publicly read from the Torah or lead prayer services whenever there is a minyan (quorum of 10 males) available to do so. However, the public celebration of a girl becoming Bat Mitzvah in other ways has made strong inroads in Modern Orthodox Judaism and also in some elements of Haredi Judaism. In these congregations, women do not read from the Torah or lead prayer services, but occasionally they will lecture on a Jewish topic to mark their coming of age, learn a book of Tanakh, recite verses from the Book of Esther or the Book of Psalms, or say prayers from the siddur. In some modern Orthodox circles, bat mitzvah girls will read from the Torah and lead prayer services in a women's tefillah. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, a prominent Orthodox posek, has ruled that Bat Mitzvah celebrations are allowable and not be construed as imitating non-Jewish customs; however, they do not have the status of seudat mitzvah. Rabbi Avadia Yosef holds that it is a seudat mitzvah.

How do you spell Barmitzva?

The correct spelling is "bar mitzvah" (Jewish rite of adulthood). In some US style guides (but not most) it is capitalized Bar Mitzvah. The corresponding term for a female is "bat mitzvah."

What denominations practice bat mitzvah?

All of them do, so some extent. A girl becomes bat mitzvah as a matter of age, regardless of whether the event is celebrated. Celebrating the bat mitzvah in much the way the bar mitzvah has traditionally been celebrated began in 1922 in the United States. Among liberal Jews (Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, Renewal and Humanist) there is now little difference between a bar mitzvah and a bat mitzvah, as the girl is considered just as able to lead part of the service as a boy. On the Modern Orthodox side, the girl will not lead services, but may give a dvar torah at a service (a sermon). On the Hassidic side of things, some families have female-only gatherings where the girl does more than just give a sermon, but not lead any of the elements of the liturgy, since that is for men.

Are you asked to participate in any way at a bar mitzvah?

A person may be asked to participate in the Bar Mitzvah ceremony by performing an honor or something similar, but this participation is known well in advance of the Bar Mitzvah. The synagogue will not put any person on the spot to perform some aspect for the Bar Mitzvah.
