Why some countries have big armies and others have smaller armies?

There are a number of reasons for this. Bigger countries are able to produce bigger armies, as a general rule; they have more money to spend on weapons, and more population from whom to recruit soldiers. But in addition to that, some countries expect to be attacked by their neighbors (Israel is a good example) and therefore take extra steps to prepare for those attacks, and other countries (Luxembourg, for example) do not expect to be attacked by their neighbors and see little reason to have a large army. North Korea has a large army because it still has ambitions to overrun South Korea.
