Actually it was the majority who didn't want the public to elect the president. When Washington became president in 1789 about 60% of the colonies didn't speak or read English. They created a Republic and not a true democracy and didn't believe "in the people". In 1787 only three-fourths of the white adult males did not vote because they didn't meet the property qualification . The mistrust of the people was the reason for the system of checks and balances, the election of senators by the state legislatures, and the electoral college. The constitution was built on the premise that man is "ambitious , vindictive , and rapacious ."( Bailyn The ideological origins of the American Revolution , 1967, p. 60).
