The short answer is you can't; if the TV only has a mono receiver the stereo information isn't available. If you have hooked up your DVD player and get sound but no picture, try changing the picture source from TV to AV 1.

The reason you hear sound before the picture is that your speakers will work immediate as your screen needs a second or two to start up.
A TV amplifier is commonly used to make the sound larger and the picture clearer. I would make sure that you have it connected properly before using it.
Try changing the source on the television to AV1 if you only have sound but no picture from a DVD player. If it is on TV it will not play a DVD.
