Summaries tend to tell the reader a brief explanation about what that piece of writing is about. For example, books have a summary about what they are about. Summaries are important because they give the reader an idea about what to expect from a book, presentation given in writing, and many more.

Also, summaries in essays and book reports usually get a student's grade higher, possibly bump up their grades by 15%, which is a lot.

Summaries in book reports and essays will usually let the reader infer that the person who wrote it, is aware of the reader's attention.
