The blue crane has been chosen to be the national bird of South Africa because it is one bird that is only found in its natural state in Southern Africa and nowhere else. About fifteen other kinds of cranes are found worldwide, but the blue crane is truly South African. Its population has, however, dwindled sadly from thousands upon thousands in the past to maybe only a few tens of thousand today.
