This might mean copying the files to physical storage, such as a thumb or flash drive or an external hard drive, or copying them to an online storage provider (a.k.a. "the cloud"). Having copies stored externally protects them in case your computer is lost, stolen, or otherwise damaged to the point of being unusable. Files can also be moved from one computer to another in the same way (transport). In the early days of computing, before networks became commonplace, the only way to get data from one computer to another was to copy it to an external storage device - in those days a floppy disk - and physically carry it to the other computer (hence the term "sneakernet").
