During the American Revolution, the Americans did not receive any support from outside nations for several years. It was not until their victory at Saratoga (in 1777) that France was willing to offer public (and quite generous) support of the American cause. The reason is that the French, like other European peoples, were not willing to lend a hand to a cause that was doomed to fail: they needed assurance (through victories by the Americans) that their help would be going to a serious, legitimate cause.
To make sure that the Partiots are winning and they are going to be on the winning side.

The Battle of Saratoga
The (Second) Battle of Saratoga (October 7-17, 1777) convinced the French that they should support the Americans because the colonials seemed to have a real chance at victory over the British. Shortly after the Battle of Monmouth (June 28, 1778), a French fleet began operating off the New England coast in support of the Treaty of Alliance signed on February 6, 1778.
There were two battles of Saratoga, which one do you mean? In the final battle, the Americans won because the British surrendered because they were outnumbered.
