Short answer, because George W. Bush and his friends thought Saddam Husein needed to be overthrown.
Longer answer: It was claimed that Saddam Hussein had 'weapons of mass destruction in his possession. ( The U.S. govt. trumped up the scant evidence for this, and it eventually turned out to be false. ) About 9 years earlier Saddam had invaded Kuwait (when George's daddy was president) and had to be driven out. He had also killed people in several towns using toxic gas weapons. But when the U.S. troops drove Saddam's troops out of Kuwait, instead of going after Saddam, and removing him from power at that time, the u.s. troops pretty much just stopped at the border. So to make up for his daddy's mistake of not overthrowing Saddam in 1991, George W. invaded when U.S. troops were sent to to the Middle East after the world trade center incident.
Iraq had nothing to do with the 9-11 destruction of the world trade center nor had any al-queida involvement.
Iraq invaded Kuwait and gained control of its oil production
How did the US go a isolationism foreign policy to a political and military involvement?
Yes. There was no US formal declaration of war, but there was US military involvement, so they are considered "conflicts" in US jurisprudence. However, for the Iraqis, Vietnamese, and Koreans, they were certainly wars.
ALL of US military branches are currently seving some part in Iraq.
The US invaded in March of 2002 and we have been there ever since!
The first was over Iraq taking Kuwait. The second was an attempt by US to reduce Iraq's military power.
Iraq invaded Kuwait as part of the ongoing oil conflict.
It was not related. We are not taking over Iraq and stealing its oil, the "war" is not actually a war, it is a joint military effort between the US military and the military of Iraq against Islamic radicals.
