I think the main cause is from human beings. We discharge a large quantity of pollution into the environment, no matter to the air or the rivers, it will lead to secondary pollutions to the rivers, so things became this. Luckily, we humans have realized that there is a more important thing than economic developing, that is survival. Without the environment, there will be no life, let alone economic development.

The quality of water is deteriorating because of many reasons :

1) We often get water from polluted sources. The Ganges is an example of a very polluted river which provides water to millions.

2) Water is often 'recycled' i.e sewage is treated and released into a water body. The same water is used again.

3) Many factories release untreated wastes into rivers. This is a major concern.

4) Available fresh water is declining every day. People cannot rely on sea water.

Pollution, not enough purification and too many people. The water is becoming more and more Scarce because of all of the people.
