Electronic devices works with electric current (AC / DC), some conductors are used to control current by amplifying, change in voltage etc.

All eletronic devices have its own power supply systemthat regulates electric current. These power system uses transfermer with diode and capacitors in old days but now transiter is used along with other as in smps. Main function of typical power suply system is to give electrical devices constant voltage/ current and save from sudden change in voltage. Sometime different part of electronic device requries different voltage electric current, which we have with power supply.

Other systems of electronic devices are just controling/modifying current, frequency of electrical current, amplification etc. all this is done easily by semiconductor like transitor, diode etc.

Actually many things can be used, not just semiconductors:

  1. Charles Babbage in the early 1800s designed a computer using brass and soft iron mechanical parts, called the Analytical Engine. Unfortunately he never got it built, but it definitely would have worked.
  2. Konrad Zuse in the 1930s designed and built two mechanical computers using sliding steel sheetsand one electromechanical computer using relays. Unfortunately his machines were destroyed in the Allied bombing of Germany in WW2 and he had to start over after the war.
  3. Howard Aiken designed and had IBM build a large electromechanical computer using relays, clutches, counters, etc. in 1942. It was used throughout WW2 and many years after.
  4. John Vincent Atanasoff designed and built the first electronic digital computer in 1942 using vacuum tubes. Unfortunately it was about 1 inch too wide to fit through a door so when the university where he built it needed the space for additional classrooms later that year it was cut up and scrapped.
  5. Most computers from 1942 to 1958 used vacuum tubes. Other devices were experimented with like magnetic amplifiers (made of ferrite or permalloy) and germanium point contact transistors, during this period such computers were usually lab prototypes but a small number did make it to market in the later part of this period.
  6. About 1958 germanium alloy junction transistors made the transistorized computer practical.
  7. About 1961 silicon diffusion junction transistorsentered the computer market.
  8. About 1964 silicon integrated circuits entered the computer market.
  9. In the middle 1960s much work was done on fluidic logic computers, as they would not be sensitive to radiation in space or from nuclear weapons explosions. Fluidic logic uses liquids like water or hydraulic fluid flowing through tiny channels machined in metal or plastic sheetsto perform boolean logic operations and data storage. This work ended when "radiation hardening" technologies were developed that made semiconductor devices reasonably resistant to radiation damage and faults. Semiconductor devices miniaturized much easier than fluidics devices.
  10. In the 1970s and 1980s several supercomputers were designed using gallium arsenide instead of silicon. But gallium arsenide is expensive to fabricate and it has seen little use since then, except in microwave transistors and some solar cells.
Basically computers are designed and built around the best available technology of the day. Eventually it is almost a certainty that carbon will replace silicon in computers, either in the form of diamond film integrated circuits or nanotube integrated circuits. Optical logic based on doped glass is another good candidate to replace silicon.

Both are used in making electronic semiconductor devices. They are used in some types of alloys. Silicon is used to make high temperature polymers for plastics, greases, oils, etc.

What are materials which are suitable for electronic devices?

there are several type of electronics devices and several type of material used for these devices but material which is used for device should able to full fill the requirement of that device. for instance rectifier diode - Silicon Photo Diode - Germanium High Frequency devices - GaAs, InGaAs, GaP etc. Every material has it's own configuration so conclusion is that any one semiconductor material can not used as universal material for all semiconductor devices.
