There is a sensor that is damaged, bent, broken or missing for this.
Much more rare and mostly on older cars the wiring could be damaged to the sensor.
open trunk lid and locate the trunk light switch.push switch to see if light goes off. if light does not go off, replace switch. if light does go off, adjust switch to where trunk lid operates switch when trunk is closed
You can open it from inside the trunk by lowering the back seats. On the inside of the trunk door, there is a white lever. Pull it and the trunk will open.

If the trunk is actually closed, sounds like a faulty sensor
It is not possible to replace the trunk lock on a 1993 Caprice Classic while the trunk is closed. A person will have to remove the back seat, crawl into the trunk and open the lock manually before it can be replaced.
You may have a Mercedes and the trunk warning light has been known to stay on where you can't put the top down. Try opening the trunk and slamming it shut. The problem may be the pneumatic supply pump (PSE) which is supposed to pull the trunk all the way down.
Check to see if your trunk is open or if the clasp that holds it closed is loose.
What year on my 2000 after removing all the nuts that hold the lights on the trunk. I couldn't remove the assembly with the trunk open. I fought this several times with no luck. So as a last resort I closed the trunk and the assembly came out. The book showed it coming out with trunk open. HOPE THIS HELPS
Get a new car that's actually worth something.
Remove the power trunk release, it may be stuck and holding the latch to the open position. I had same problem and found that if I use the key to unlock power lock then closed trunk - it worked.
