If thunder is close it makes a cracking noise, as opposed to a rumble.

This is because lightning not only produces high electrical voltage, but as that voltage is released as lightning, a tremendous amount of heat is created.

This heat is so great that it forces the are around the lightening bolt to expand, much like an explosion.

If the lightening is close, you will hear a crack, but distance and air expansion dissipates that crack and turns it into a rumble. Generally speaking, the deeper the note of the thunder, the further away it is.
