If you draw a circle on a piece of paper then put a vertical and horizontal line through it (these lines going though the centre point of the circle), then the horizontal line represents the equator (0 degrees) and the vertical line represents the axis of rotation of the Earth and passes though the N and S poles.

Now if you look at the diagram you will see that at the centre point where the vertical and horizontal lines cross, they meet at a right angle (at 90 degrees). Thus the highest latitude you can get to N or S is 90 degrees from the plane of the equator.
