Why this symbol or word Mormon?

LDS stands for later day saints the full name of the church being the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints. Mormon is a term people took from the book they belive in the book of mormon.

The term Mormon was a derisive name given by the populace to the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It was taken from the Name of the additional scripture that supplements the Bible by telling of what was going on in what would become known as the Americas at the same time period that is covered in the Bible which was more geared to the Middle East generally speaking.

The engraving of the plates was by a scribe named Mormon, the first page of the Book of Mormon says it was written by the hand of Mormon.

But it was always used by non members as a slur until comparatively recently and still is by some people depending oh the way it is used.
