Americans had been expanding westward for decades before the Civil War. For example both California and Oregon were Union States when the war began.

With that said, the ending of the war did enable more people from the eastern half of the United States to head West. The population of territories and States increased from areas that were east of St. Louis.

Here are reasons for the expansion:

A. The transcontinental railway system was completed in 1869;

B. This enabled people, products, and the US Military with faster travel time between the east and west along with faster time within the west itself;

C. Due to the providence of the US Government, most of the rights of way, different types of land leases, and "gifts" of various kinds, enabled the railway companies ti expand into a large network of transit;

E. It came to a point where a huge percentage of the world's railway miles were in the USA.

F. Postal services, transportation of mining ores, cattle cars, all cut costs for the movement West;

G. It may be true that most of the California gold rush was over, but mining of silver in Nevada was profitable as well;

H. Some people decimated by the War, looked to the West as a new start; and

I. The ability of the US Army to protect settlers from conflicts with the Native Tribe populations permitted more settlers who believed that the Army would protect them.
