Microbes, both "good" and "bad", are important to study for health reasons. "Bad" microbes cause disease, and it's good to know for example, how to keep surfaces like kitchens and hospitals free of infectious germs. Also it is good to know how microbes interact with the human body so one can prevent or treat disease.

Some bacteria are beneficial to health. For example, bacteria in yogurt can help intestinal health, skin health and to fight yeast infections in humans. Antibiotics are made of molds and can help fight "bad" bacteria.

"Good" microbes are used in food production. Cheese, yogurt, Alcoholic Beverages and fermented foods all use microorganisms. It is good to know how to grow (or limit growth) to make fermented foods properly.
