There are many reasons why communication may fail. For example (assuming a cabled network), there may be no connected cable, the network card may be damaged, or there may be a communication problem at higher levels. First, check to see whether the computer detects the cable. Then you might try a PING command, to see whether low-level communication works.
Computers normally show an address of 0.0.0.0 when they are not connected to a TCP/IP network. Having this address, a computer cannot be reached or communicate with any other devices over IP. TCP/IP software applications also use 0.0.0.0 as a programming technique to monitor network traffic from any valid IP address. While connected computers do not use this address, messages carried over IP sometimes include 0.0.0.0 inside the header when the source of the message is unknown.

ifconfig -a
Having a valid IP address without a default gateway will result in network traffic staying within your LAN. Meaning, your computer lacks the ability to send data out of your network, preventing you from accessing resources outside your network, such as the internet.

Internet Protocol SuiteeConnecting to the Internet consists of having a physical connection to a network which has a connection to the Internet, having an address that works on the Internet, and having routes to destinations on the Internet.Modern computers have a local area network (LAN) port which uses the Ethernet protocol (IEEE 802.3). Through this port, a cable consisting of at least four wires connects pins 1&2 and 3&6 as receive and transmit paths to a connection device. That connection device, be it a switch, hub, or router, allows the physical connection to be successful.Once the physical connection is there, the computer either uses a built in hard-coded "static" Internet Protocol (IP) address, or it requests one "dynamically" via the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).Finally routing is either statically assigned ("set default route") or it is provided by the DHCP server as the "gateway" address.A computer which has the physical connection... which has a valid IP address... and which has a route to other destinations is therefore connected to the Internet.
This is a network address.
