John Wilkes Booth was a supporter of slavery who always had a deep hatred of Abraham Lincoln. At Lincoln's second inauguration ceremony, Booth planned to assassinate him. Also, at one of Lincoln's Famous Speeches (the one that he gave standing on the balcony over the North Portico at the White House), Booth had a perfect shot to "finish the job," but would not do it. At Ford's Theater, however, Booth shot Lincoln in the back of the head, and escaped. It was because of Booth's deep hatred of Lincoln and the Republican Party that led to Lincoln's assassination.
