Unaware that Second Peter is a pseudepigraphical epistle, they assumed this either meant that Mark was indeed the son of Peter or at least that Peter held Mark in high esteem. A tradition subsequently arose that Mark wrote the second gospel based on the memoirs of Peter, although another early tradition was that Mark's Gospel was written as a summary of Matthew's Gospel (the evidence is that Mark's Gospel was actually written before Matthew).
Because we now know that 2 Peter was written long after the death of Peter, it can no longer be considered as evidence that Mark even knew Peter. Mark's Gospel was written before Matthew).
