The reason that Atlanta was originally called the Gate City was because it was a commercial way station between the coastal ports and the agricultural land in and around the Ohio River Valley. In the early 1800s, nobody placed much value on the foothill region of the Appellation Mts. It was simply an obstacle. Private enterprise couldn't afford to span the region with rail lines, so the State - flush with money from the recent land lotteries - agreed to use their funds to meet the private railroads half way. It so happened that they all agreed that the spot where downtown Atlanta is located today was a good spot for it. However, it also meant that passengers and cargo had to switch carriers here - hence it was like a gate through which all of those people and all of that stuff had to pass. Even today, people still refer to Atlanta as the world's largest inland port.
