Augustus was the man who brought the Roman Republic to an end and established rule by emperors. He therefore radically reformed the Roman state and established personal rule. Augustus also promoted the development of trade around the empire and beyond and promoted infrastructure projects which helped trade (roads, ports, aqueducts, etc.) Augustus also promoted the monumental embellishment of Rome and was a patron of literature.
