The main reason why Australia was chosen as the new site to which to send convicts was that, after James Cook's successful voyage which involved charting the eastern coast of Australia, New South Wales was seen as a viable proposition for a convict colony. In particular, it was endorsed by Sir Joseph Banks, the influential botanist who travelled with Cook.
There were other reasons why Australia was seen as a good strategic site. By sending convicts to Australia, it enabled expansion of the British empire, while preventing the French from gaining a foothold in the Australian continent or in that part of the Pacific. Also, due to war, Britain needed to find an alternative supply of Flax and timber as her Baltic supply was under threat. It was believed that nearby Norfolk Island would provide this. Furthermore, Britain needed a port in the East to promote trade with China and to extend its naval and commercial power.

New South Wales was the first place in Australia to be colonised. The reason it was chosen was that James Cook and his botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, recommended Botany Bay as suitable for settlement, particularly a convict settlement. The site was far enough away that there was little likelihood that pardoned convicts would return to England, and there was nowhere for the convicts to escape to. meanwhile, but sending people to New South Wales, England reinforced its claim on the continent and expanded its empire. While Botany Bay itself was not settled because Captain Arthur Phillip, who led the First Fleet of convicts, deemed it usuitable for several reasons, Port Jackson became the site of the only colony in Australia. It was logical to send convicts there, and for settlers to arrive there, as it was the only known port in Australia for at least 16 years.
