In Breaking Dawn, Bella becomes pregnant. The baby is half-human, half-vampire, and, during the pregnancy, uses Bella's energy to stay alive. Even though Edward and Jacob try to talk Bella into letting Carlisle take the baby out of her, she continues to put herself in danger to keep the baby alive. When the baby is actually born, it all but kills Bella, but Edward keeps her alive by changing her into a vampire.
