What made Christopher Columbus a hero?

He was not a great explorer because he lied to his crew about how far they were he said they were only three miles from Spain when he was three hundred miles away from home. Crhistopher Columbus wihtout a doubt was a heroic being, and a great explorer. Anti-America people want to sell the story that Columbus killed millions of innocent people, LIE. Columbus never landed on what is now US territory. Anti-America people have fabricated that lie that he come to the United States and killed millions of indians, not true. Sadly, this is what they teach in schools. On the contrary, Columbus helped Central and South America indigeneous become civilized. Before he come to south territories indigeneous practiced human sacrifices, killed innocent babies to please their, aztec, maya, and inca gods. Columbus taugh them that human sacrifice was wrong, thanx Columbus. I am Hispanic and I admire Columbus for educating us.

Columbus is not really considered a hero. A hero saves people. Columbus didn't save anyone. In fact he killed them and cut off Native American hands when they didn't bring him gold. Columbus was greedy and a fortune hunter. He wrote " Gold is most excellent. He who possesses gold may do all he wishes in this world." There was nothing heroic about him and the European invasion of the Americas was nothing more than a quest for profit. It led to the death of millions and the destruction of the environment. He was a salesman and made his presentation to anyone who would listen. He wanted 10% of any riches he produced in the lands he might discover, he wanted the title of Admiral of the Ocean Sea, and everything to be passed to his descendants. He spent the final years of his life arguing over the 10% of the profit he thought he was due from the New World. This is not a hero.
