Castro overthrew Batista in 1958 and assumed power on 1 Jan 1959. He declared himself president and joined forces with former USSR in order to fight capitalism. He wanted to make Cuba a country with no class distinctions, everyone was supposed to be equal.

Cuba had a very corrupt government under Batista. The people came to support Fidel Castro. Most Cubans lived in poverty without education, health care and jobs. The 1% were wealthy and no one else had a chance. So these people liked what they heard from Fidel. Under communism with massive Soviet aid, the average Cuban had it better economically if not in freedom.
