Israelis generally consider David Ben-Gurion to be a hero for his actions in the early days of the State of Israel. As the Zionist Leader on the ground in Mandatory Palestine, he coordinated all of the Zionist militias (the Haganah, Palmach, Irgun, and Lehi), made diplomatic provisions and overtures that would be carried to foreign governments and the United Nations by Zionist lieutenants, read the Israeli Declaration of Independence, maintained the country's war effort in the Israeli War of Independence, and, finally, provided stern and guided leadership for the first decade of Israel's new statehood, providing a trajectory of development and organization, especially with integrating the large waves of Mizrahi Jewish Immigration from Arab countries.
