His government freed the slaves when his daughter, Princess Isabel, in a period of regency while the Emperor was in France for medical treatment, signed the "Lei Aurea" ( The Golden Law ). This irritated the very rich and powerful coffee farmers of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais who decided then to support the idea of overthowing the Crown and stablishing a Republican Government that supported their ideas of keeping former slaves living in the same conditions as before. The Emperial Family was forced into exile in France and the people of Brazil watched in disbelief as their country turned into a Republican Military Dictadorship.
