He was a black man who bought a home in a white neighborhood in 1925 in Detroit. Some people from the neighborhood formed a mob and attacked his home or threatened to. He and / or some of his friends and family defended the home and used guns to shoot some of the members of the threatening mob. It was a self-defense case. He was tried but acquitted (found not guilty).
