In 1795, Fort Edmonton was established on the north bank of the river, as a major trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company.

It was named after Edmonton, London, the home town of HBC deputy governor Sir James Winter Lake.

Edmonton is located historically on where Fort Edmonton used to be, which was a trading post back in the 1800's to the early 1900's where men and voyagers could travel along the North Saskatchewan River from afar to trade furs and buy supplies when needed. For Edmonton was one of the major trading posts in Canada, long before it was renamed as Edmonton, Alberta became a province and Edmonton became capital of Alberta.
