Haig had many criticisms against him, but perhaps the most damaging was that he may have overzealously exceded his authority by announcing that he was in control of the Reagan Administration following the assassination attempt against Reagan in 1981. It turned out to be the action of a single warped mind, but at the time it was not known whether or not the would-be assassin was part of a conspiracy to overthrow the US government. If such had been the case, I think that Haig would have been praised rather than criticized for taking control.
He let loads of men die and he was at home beyond the trenches drinking tea. The other generals were there.

British Field Marshal Haig commanded the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) in France for about the last three years of WWI. Lloyd George, in particular, detested Haig, but could not sack him because Haig was a favorite of the King.
