Why was Germany split in World War 2?

The war didn't just contribute, it caused the division. The victorious Allies (U.S., U.K., France, and the Soviet Union) met at the end of WW2 to plan Germany's occupation and eventual reconstruction. The country was divided into four zones, each occupied by the forces of one of the victors. Berlin was similarly divided into four parts. In addition, the two "arms" that made up the easternmost part of the Third Reich were taken away and ceded to Poland, and the separate state of East Prussia was split between Poland and the Soviet Union. The 3 western powers agreed to reunite their sectors once democracy was established. However the Soviet Union, then ruled by Josef Stalin, refused to allow democratic reforms in its sector and instead established a so-called "People's Republic" in eastern Germany, along with similar puppet states in the other eastern European countries it had conquered. The result was the creation of two Germanys, the western Federal Republic (or BDR, for Bundesrepublik Deutschland in German) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (or DDR, Deutsche Demokratische Republik). The word "democratic" was of course part of the Orwellian Newspeak terminology that the Soviets used when naming their newly-established client dictatorships. That division persisted until the revolution of 1989-90 when the Berlin Wall fell and the DDR collapsed under the weight of public dissent and economic stagnation. World War 1 was the result of German aggression. The terms of the WW1 German surrender restricted future military action, and when Germany attempted to conquer Europe in WW2, it was in direct violation of the terms of that surrender. Folowing WW2, the Allied forces decided that it would be best to prevent any future German attempts to attempt to take over Europe and eventually the world. In general, it was decided to divide Germany into 3 parts in an effort to limit their abilities. It was probably a good idea.

Germany was brought to ruins, occupied by the allies and divided into East and West Germany.

Especially the eastern Germans suffered retaliation by the Red Army for the Barbarossa campaign, with rapes etc.

Borders were moved and lots of families were displaced, and basically homeless.

Those under Soviet control had to accept communist rule until 1989.

Many of the intelligentia and brilliant scientists had escaped from the country, especially Jews.

The national Socialist party was dismantled and forbidden, and many of its key people and war criminals were sentenced in the Nürnberg trials.

Germany had to pay a compensation to Jews affected by their genocide efforts.

Germans and the German language were disliked by many, losing its major importance for some time.

Most cities and infrastructure were in ruins after massive air bombardment.

Economy was in ruins after using massive resources for war.

Over 5 million people had perished, and many kids were orphans, roaming in the cities looking for food.

The people depended on human aid from the allies.

Germany became a central scene for the cold war, with the blockade of Berlin and placement of much armament.

Germany came to have NATO bases with US troops stationed there.

Wise from WWI the allies supported a build-up instead of a humiliating punishment of the country, so two decades after the war economy had bloomed again.
