It's not really clear why -- one of the first gothic novels was The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole. He said he was tired of reading medieval romances!

It seems as though the world was just ready for a mix of romance and spookiness, just as recently they seem to be ready for a mix of vampires and romance!
