It was essentially an accident of history that Great Britain became the first country industrialize. It started out with the problem that some of the coal mines were flooded, and people were looking for a more efficient way to pump water out of the mines so that the coal could continue to be mined. A steam engine was invented for this purpose. Once the steam engine existed, people started to find other uses for it. Steam locomotives were invented. One innovation leads to another, and gradually, the Industrial Revolution got underway.
