Harvard College was founded as a Puritan college with its primary purpose to train new ministers. New ministers were needed because with the increasing population of the Puritan colonies of New England, the parishes were strained because there was a shortage of ministers.
Harvard was established in 1636 to ensure an adequate supply of ministers was produced for New England and its religious way of life.
Harvard University was originally intended as a training seminary for clergymen. The revered school holds its first classes in 1636.
Something to do with priests.....I think.
The Red Cross was originally founded to help wounded soldiers in war get better.

Harvard was founded as a result of Rev. George Phillips's desire to reproduce in the New World what he most loved in the old one: Cambridge University.George was a graduate of Gonville and Caius college, Cambridge and was a buddy of Winthrop in England. He arrived in Massachusetts with Gov. Winthrop's fleet. He managed eventually to change the name of New Towne to Cambridge, but was obliged to respect wishes of the guy who put up the money/land for the first college and so it was Harvard. Harvard was intended to be just one college in a university to be called Cambridge University (in Cambridge of course, just like England ) but George died and things drifted into the present situation of Harvard being used both for the college and for the University.Harvard College was founded as a Puritan college with its primary purpose to train new ministers. New ministers were needed because with the increasing population of the Puritan colonies of New England, the parishes were strained because there was a shortage of ministers. The Puritans found Harvard College to ensure the perpertuity of their religious sect. The only classe of three people (other two types of people were strangers and the others) who left England and settled in Colonial New America for solely religious reasons to establish a new sect of Christian Worship outside the Church of England. The Puritians should not be confused with the Separists who wanted to reform the Church of England to their higher standards. The Puritans wanted no part of the Church of England because they thought that church was so far gone that it could not be changed. The population of the first Puritans dramatically decreased (as the general population) due to disease mostly and attached by the Native Americans. Much needed additional Puritans arrived on subsequent ships (Mayflower and others). The Puritans established towns and incorporated laws strictly following their interpretations of the Bible and their religious beliefs. The Puritan belief was different than that of other "Protestant" religions. The first Puritans and religious settlers were more educated, learned, civilized, and devoted to their religion than other subsequent settlers. Before too long, the Puritans were a minority of the new settlers arriving in the New World and eventually the general population. The family (the mother) was responsible for teaching writing and reading to the young children. The reason to teach the children to read was soley to read the Bible and for religious training. But full-time teachers were needed to train religious leaders that were needed to convert new people and establish new churches in new towns. Thus, the Harvard University was founded. Religious education was the primary study in the beginning of Harvard. All of Havard faculty were Puritans. The first classroom of Harvard was the house of a Puritan preacher and educator. The first class consisted of only a handful of pupils. The college grew rapidly after it was chartered by the local governing body and wealthy benefactors were found. Evenutally the Unitarians quickly secularized the school many years later. Please see other sources for more detailed information.
it was originally built to keep people out of london
the purpose of why New York was founded was so people would be able to have RELIGIOUS FREEDOM & so they would be able to TRADE.
Personally, I do not believe so. The purpose it was originally designed for in the days of low population in some areas of the US, is no longer valid and many believe it no longer serves a purpose.
