Hiroshima, the capital of Japan's Hiroshima Prefecture, was the target of the first nuclear weapon dropped by the United States in the war. A number of Japanese cities were selected as possible targets (but not Tokyo) to demonstrate the power of a nuclear device to the Japanese High Command and the Emporer of Japan. It was hoped that they would see the wisdom in immediate surrender and the end of the War in the Pacific (WWII). Links are provided.

∙ 14y agoHisroshima was one of many cities on a list the pilots of the bomber planes had to use for places to bomb. Hiroshima was not a sacred city and it did have some military installations or places used to develop war weapons. Hiroshima was bombed as an alternative because of bad weather. It was not so much that it was important but rather a victim of fate due to the city they intended to bomb being inaccessible. It will always be famous for being the first city to receive an atom bomb.
