Hume and Hovell are important for being the first explorers to travel overland between Sydney and Bass Strait. Their expedition opened up some of Australia's richest land for settlement, and they were the first white men to see the Murray River (which they called the Hume) and some of its eastern tributaries.

∙ 13y agoThe exploration of Hume and Hovell was important because, by discovering excellent rivers and good, fertile land, it led to the acquisition of new land by settlers, and therefore the expansion of the settled areas and the agricultural industry.
The exploration also resulted in the discovery of an overland route to the south. Prior to Hume and Hovell's expedition, the only route to the south was by sea. The route they took is now roughly followed by the main highway between Sydney and Melbourne.
Hume and Hovell discovered and mapped numerous rivers in what is now Victoria, adding to the knowledge of inland Australia.
