He was imprisoned for 2 years under harsh conditions without being brought to trial- I would not call that spared. Many people thought he was unfairly treated. The government eventually dropped all charges against him. He was an honorable man who had a long record of public service . He was not a war criminal in any way. It was not all clear that the southern states did not have a right to secede from a union which they had voluntarily joined but which was no longer serving their interests and they did it openly and with due process from their legislatures- the same bodies who had ratified the constitution.
