At various times in its long history, Jericho had walls around it to protect the city from foreign invaders. The last wall before the Hebrew period collapsed during an earthquake in the sixteenth century BCE and was not rebuilt. By the late fifteenth century and the time traditionally attributed to the Israelite invasion, the city had long been abandoned and only a small, mud-brick village existed on the site of the former city.
Had there still been a city at the time of Joshua, there would have been no need to have rebuilt the wall in any case, because Egypt, the colonial power that dominated the entire Levant region, guaranteed the safety of the Canaanite cities, as we see for example in the Amarna letters of the early fourteenth century.

Were the walls of Jericho the same as walls of Nineveh?

Jericho and Nineveh are two quite different cities, each at various times with its own walls. Jericho is believed to be one of the oldest walled cities in history. Each time the city was abandoned then later resettled, its walls were rebuilt, not always in the same location or using the same technique. The walls of Jericho were destroyed by earthquake sometime prior to 1500 BCE and not rebuilt until the Israelite period, almost a thousand years later.

What was the second city destroyed by Joshua?

A:According to Joshua chapter 8, Joshua destroyed the city of Ai after having captured and destroyed Jericho. However, the city of Ai did not exist at the time of Joshua. It had not existed for eight centuries before the Bible says that Joshua conquered it, having been abandoned in ruins around 2200 BCE. The very name Ai means 'Ruins', the name eventually given to the site by the Hebrew people because they never knew its old name and only ever knew it literally as ruins. Archaeologists say that neither Jericho nor Ai was conquered or destroyed by the Israelites.
