Jesse's body was never recovered from the crash at the Chosen Reservoir in Korea. He was trapped in the F4U Corsair wreckage. His plane and Thomas Hudners plane were both destroyed by Napalm strikes to avoid being taken into enemy hands. Hudner tried to rescue Jesse but his body was mangled with the wreckage. This "Fire Strike" on the planes with Napalm and on Jesse was the most dignified way they could think of to honor Jesse.
