He was executed for a trumped up charge of trying to undermine the government by claiming to be the rightful king.

The people just hated him, but they couldn't find a good reason for the Son of God to be killed. They charged him with that crime in the Jewish courts. Then when he was tried on the political courts, they changed the reason to ones that the political rulers would care about.
The Jewish religious authorities saw Jesus as a threat, because so many people were following him. Because He said things such as 'I am the son of God'', they charged him with blasphemy and knew that Jesus would then be executed.
